5 Things You Should Do If You Lose Your Credit Card

Have you ever lost your credit card?  I did recently and it was a nightmare.  In this post I’m going to share with you the things I learned along the way.

5 Things You Should Do

  1. Where did you last have it at? The first thing I did when I lost my credit card was think of last place I used it.  Knowing where you last used it provides a good starting point of where you might have left it.  Start by checking your wallet and see if anything else is missing as well.  In my case I was missing just the one card.  This meant there was a pretty good chance that nobody had stolen it.
  2. Review your transactions. If you can’t remember where you last had it check your recent transactions.  You can do this by calling your credit card company or talking to the bank you got the card from.  This will tell you the last place you used it at.  Fortunately, this is all I had to do in my case, I called the last place I used it and they said they had it.  However, this may not be the case for everyone.
  3. Cancel your credit card. If you noticed fraudulent transactions, cancel the card immediately.  If you still haven’t found the card try checking a few other places first.  If you have kids check the toy box or places you kids play, they may have been playing with your wallet or purse and taken it out.  I suspected my kids of this but it wasn’t the case.  You should also check places that you would normally place your wallet or purse.  In the end if you can’t find it, it would be best to cancel the card and start over than risking the card fall into criminal hands.
  4. Check your credit report. Finally, check your credit; you never know what kind mistakes you might uncover here.  If you do find anything suspicious with your credit reports file a dispute with the credit bureau immediately.  You can get a credit report for cheap at annualcreditreport.com.

Finally, if any damage has been done check your home owners insurance to see if you have identity theft protection.  A lot of policies have this already included and if you don’t you should think about adding it to yours.
